Are You Protecting Your Computer?

by: Alton Hargrave

Do you know what to look for in anti-virus software?

You just bought yourself a new computer! Can't wait to get it out of the box. Maybe you have had a computer before and maybe this is your second or third computer. And, you don't want to have all those problems you hear about. This is the time to think ahead and go for a positive online experience.

You should realize that while you are unpacking your new machine, there are people all over the world who are plotting to spoil your computer with maliscious, well-thought out plans. Your computer will endure attacks moments after you go online. This is why we all have to use antivirus protection. You and I just have no choice. The single most important program on your computer is your anti virus program. And, it should be a really good one. Everything on your computer, from your valuable software, your work, to your personal financial records is contantly at risk. I will explain some of the features you should look for in anti-virus software.

Most of us make our choice on price alone. That is, after we use the product that comes with our computers. This is not the way to choose something so important. You need to look at several products before making your decision.

Look at your available options. Start with the anti virus software that came with your PC. You can get started by getting that software up and running. Don't try to postpone using anti-virus software. After a period of time, your software needs updated. While you are online, your software should be allowed to make daily updates. It is very important to make the first update as soon as your new computer is online for the first time. It is very likely there have been a lot of new threats and viruses introduced since the computer left the factory. Updating the software is the best way to keep your computer protected against these new online dangers.

As you use the software that came with your new computer, it is a good idea to make a list of what you like ? and don?t like ? about it. Is it easy to update? Is it user friendly? Is it easy to see any problems? Does the software notify you if the update could not be completed? Are updates made available on a daily basis?

Now, you have a basis for establishing what to look for in anti-virus software. Read all you can online to get even more information. Some anti virus companies make their software available in trial versions, so be sure to check out a number of different products before deciding which one best suits your needs. Some of the best is free, without a trial.

Take some time to get the best protection you can for your computer. And, periodically back up your files. Al little planning can make your computer experience an enjoyable experience.

About The Author

Alton Hargrave offers advice and resources for those interested in a business online.
Be Informed When You Purchase A Computer

by: Sintilia Miecevole

When you go online or look at ads for electronics stores, you will probably be able to find a computer that will be just right for you. There are many types and styles available on the market. You can find a computer that will take up a whole room in your house, while you can also find a computer that will fit into the palm of your hand! At a business, you will probably find a mainframe computer. In your workplace or at home you will normally find a desktop computer. In the airport, the person sitting next to you could be working on a laptop computer or handheld computer. So, when you find yourself looking for a computer for your own personal use, you know you will have a lot to choose from.

When looking for a home computer, nowadays called a personal computer, you will find it is made up of several parts. There will be a box sitting on your desk, black, gray or beige in color. This is your actual computer, containing everything from the microprocessor to the memory, the storage to the input/output devices. You can?t work with just the ?computer? alone, though. There are accessories that go along with your computer like the monitor, keyboard, mouse and speakers. Other attachments you might find are printers and digital video cameras.

If you want to buy a computer, it is good to know that there are two separate categories of computers: PCs and Macs.

- A PC is a computer modeled after components and standards created by the IBM Company. A rather high percentage of all personal computers, shown at somewhere over 90%, are PCs. Some companies that sell PC computers are IBM, Dell, Compac, and Gateway.

- A Mac computer is a personal computer made by the Apple Company. MacIntosh was its most popular style of computer several years ago. The new IMacs are popular with die-hard Mac fans, although not as many people today use Mac computers as used to.

A personal computer in your home can be used for many things, including word processing chores, personal and business letter writing, financial records and planning, internet searching, photography, and many other types of functions like graphic design and publishing. For the younger crowd, a personal computer can also be used to listen to music, watch movies or play detailed video games.

The basic elements of your personal computer that you choose, like the processor, amount of RAM, floppy or CD-Rom disk drives, hard disk drive, sound card, speakers, monitor, modem and graphics card will be determined by what kind of computer user you plan to be. Heavy users of complex programs will need much more ?stuff? on their computer than the average computer user. Once you?ve determined how much of everything you need, you will be able to calculate an average cost for the computer you want.

About The Author

Sintilia Miecevole, host of http://www.funkycomputer.com provides you with computer information from hardware, software and accessories to printers, games, reviews and more.
3 Simple Ways To Save A Bunch Of Money When Buying A New Computer!

by: Kris Bickell

Looking to buy a new computer?

Overwhelmed by all of the options available to you?

Stressed by the high cost of computers today?

For most people, buying a new computer does not have to be as stressful as buying a new car. Nor does it have to be as expensive. If you?re like most people, and you have a limited budget for buying a computer, then you need to try to get as much computer for your money as possible.

Here are 3 simple ways anyone can save money when buying a new computer:

1) Shop around for best deal.

Sounds pretty obvious. But many people don?t realize they don?t need the fastest, most expensive computer with the most ?extras?. In fact, if you are already using an older computer, even the least expensive new computer will be a big upgrade. If you don?t know a lot about computers, you can learn a lot by shopping around. Ask lots of questions, compare prices, compare features, then find the best price. Shop at your local electronics store, and look for the best deals online. You?ll be surprised at how much money you can save by shopping around!

2) Install your own ?extras?

Many computers you will find in a store have a lot of extra software already installed. While this is convenient, it is not always the best way for you to save money. Also, while many of these extras sound good, you don?t always need them. You can often find better deals by shopping around separately for your own software extras (such as a word processor, anti-virus, popup blocker, spyware removal, games, etc). And some of these you can get for free. So before you buy the ?fully loaded? computer, ask yourself if you really need all the extras, then shop around to see if you can buy a scaled down computer - and get the extras yourself for much less!

3) Don?t buy extended warranty

If you are not a computer ?techie?, the extended warranties offered by the computer retailers often sound like a good idea. After all, who wants to be bothered paying for service on a computer after you buy it. But keep in mind that most computers come with a warranty, and most computer problems will either happen at the beginning (when you still have the warranty in effect) or much later (when it might be cheaper to buy a new computer). Technology changes very quickly these days. So consider whether or not it?s worth the inflated price of the extended warranty. And, if you really feel you need the extended warranty, then ask to purchase it at a lower price. Not all retailers will negotiate on the warranty, but some will. And whether you buy the extended warranty or not, make sure you back up all your files periodically, just in case!

If you have an unlimited budget, consider yourself lucky. And if you do business on the computer, make sure you get what you need, while trying to keep the price down. At any price, buying something that does not fit your needs is not a good deal.

Hope you find these tips helpful, and happy computer shopping!

About The Author

Kris Bickell is the owner of Hi-Speed-Internet.com, a helpful site for consumers comparing high speed internet services.
Another Kind of Computer Game

by: Allan T Price

The term computer game might have one more meaning than you realize.

You are familiar with one kind, games that run on computers? They are set in eras from prehistoric and Roman times up to the present, and into various wonderful and depressing future worlds.

There are also games in the physical world, played with pens and paper and imagination which involve the characters doing things in the virtual world of the Internet. Players, and the referee, sit with pen and paper pretending to be using computers. Instead of clicking a mouse to make a computer barbarian use his sword, these gamers roll dice to have their character ?Google? their enemy?s name, or hack into their computer.

Yes, this seem ludicrous even to me, and I?ve done it.

Remember, paper-and-pen role-playing games have evolved since their invention, just like personal computers and computer games. So, while the popular media is portraying the equivalent of ?Pong?, gamers are playing the pen-and-paper equivalent of Myst or Dark Age of Camelot.

One of the better game systems in my opinion is The Storyteller System from White Wolf Game Studios. Mostly set in modern times, they feature werewolves called Glasswalkers who are proud of being hi-tech and fond of mobile phones and personal organizers. Another game, Mage the Ascension, features a group called the Virtual Adepts who try to help humanity and change the world for the better using computers and the Internet: Just like some people in the ?real world?. I?m sure Virtual Adepts would love the idea of giving African children wind-up laptops.

But remember, Mage is ABOUT computers, not ON computer. Players and the referee just pretend to be using the Internet, using dice and imagination.

Of course like the rest of the world, Mage exists in the virtual world too. The storyteller games, and White Wolf, have websites devoted to them, both official and fan-based. There is a remarkable amount of good information about Mage available online.

So, you?ll find websites about how to pretend to surf the Internet, or create a website using a pen, paper, dice and your imagination. Or buy printed books online to help you play your Virtual Adept?s online adventures. You can also probably buy the same books in PDF format. This is useful if you use your laptop instead of pen and paper, as my friend Jess does.

I?m amused to imagine someone using their laptop to play Dark Age of Camelot, swinging swords in a computer generated world, while waiting for their fellow Mage players to arrive at their house. Then, when their friends ?physically? arrive, logging off and using their computer and a handful of dice to pretend to surf the web as a virtual adept.

About The Author

Allan T.
All In One Printers ? Home Office Workhorses

by: Bill Smith

All in one printers, also known as multifunction printers (MFPs), are printers that also can copy, scan, and in some cases, fax. These machines perform all of these functions, generally using a single set of ink cartridges for both printing and copying. They are not much larger than stand-alone printers, making them a great tool for small home offices.

You can find an excellent all-on-one Epson printer for under $200 ? a steal if you ask me. Have you ever priced a copying machine? Good luck finding one for under $750. These little gems produce high quality printouts and color copies that are indistinguishable from the originals. You?d think that these machines would ?drink? ink ? I was pleasantly surprised to find that this is not the case. The copying process uses about the same quantity of ink as the printing process.

Most MFPs offer high resolution, photo-quality printouts without sacrificing speed. This makes them ideal for the amateur photographer, the average home owner, or even the college student who needs to print thesis papers and PowerPoint presentations. You can?t imagine how helpful it is having a copier in your home. For a few extra dollars, you can pick up a printer with a built in copier and never have to run to Staples again.

The printer market is so competitive right now that you can probably score a significant rebate on an all in one printer. Recently I?ve seen rebates for as much as $50 off new Epson all-one-printers. Check around, do some price-shopping, and you too can experience the luxury of a low-cost, home copier/printer.

About The Author

Bill Smith is an expert on printers.
Color Laser Printers Of Today

by: Florie Lyn Masarate

The next printer you will ever want in your desk is a color laser printer. It is likely you would want to forget about inkjet printers already. They are cheap and the manufacturers know about that.

Do you already have a black and white laser printer? This is the kind of printer that is best for home office. Cheap and guilt-free printing with higher qualities reserved for larger office. The price is just right for the home models too. You can almost buy your own printer for the cost of a black and a color ink cartridge.

What about color laser jet printers? Color laser jet works just like a black printer except that it has 4 toner cartridges. Each one has its own life.

Photo printing is a must these days. It is obvious you want to print your pictures without the fear of using up all the ink. Digital cameras are rampant but getting the right quality perfect photo is the biggest challenge with these things.

Then came laser jet printers. Speed is the biggest consideration in printing. This is seen most especially in the offices. Seems everything has to speed up to keep up with the fast-paced world.

Here is the scope. The price is affordable enough and if you think of the advantage that it can do for you, you would no dwell much on comparing it with other printers. If you are after the pages that can be printed in minutes, laser printers would be your choice. 8 pages per minute, no less.

What?s more, some of the printers are already network ready for the home and office use.

Many other kind of printers print with the same speed and also have high memories. But the problem is that they are not network ready. With the internet being a major source of communication, it is no wonder that people would want their computers and printers network ready to be connected anywhere.

The combination of price and quality is really hard to beat. These are the factors that printers are basing their printers nowadays.

With the competition everywhere and everybody wanting to beat the latest in the computer industry, no wonder printer manufacturers are always thinking of the latest in innovative but quality-wise printers.

Is color laser printers the newest addition to the technology of today, who knows? Maybe for the moment. Until someone can think of a better model.

For comments and inquiries about the article visit http://www.losangelesprintingservice.com

About The Author

Florie Lyn Masarate got the flair for reading and writing when she got her first subscription of the school newsletter in kindergarten. The base printers I was looking at had a recommended monthly volume of up to 30,000 pages. Don?t think I?ll have that much.

Photo printing is a must these days and you want to print your pictures without the fear of using up all the ink. Digital cameras are everywhere, but getting the pictures printed in photo quality seems to be the biggest drawback to the cameras. Enter the color laserjet printer.

Speed is a big factor in printing. At home, I?m usually not in a big hurry, so I?ll spend less and wait. I?ll send stuff to the printer and check it later when it?s done. You can save a bunch if you don? t need speed. The HP2600n is my pick for a home color laser printer. The Hewlett Packard was also selected as ?PC Magazine Editor?s Choice? award.

Let me give you the scoop. First, price. Don?t be afraid. $400. Yes, that?s all for a color laser jet. Speed? 8 pages per minute. 16 meg of RAM, but the 2600n is network ready for the small or home office.

For comparison, I looked at the 2500L. This HP model was faster at 20 ppm black but only 4 ppm in color. It did have more memory ? 64MB as compared to 16MB, but it was not network ready. Price? Same.

The one thing that tipped me over the edge to the 2600n was that all 4 toner cartridges were right in the front. I personally examined this unit today and the quality is dead on with Hewlett Packard?s reputation in the printing industry.

The price and quality are hard to beat.

About The Author

Stuart Simpson

http://www.photo-printing-publishing.com/

About Centralized Computer Systems

by: Florie Lyn Masarate

Before networking was used in computer systems, copying and printing was treated in varying ways. Many companies place inexpensive printers on each employee?s desk. Talk about using maximum number of resources. As this is quite convenient for every employee, not all company can afford having to buy many printers and other things that needed for them.

Today?s printers however, thanks to modern technology, does not only copy. They are now made to follow instructions that come from network devices. This is printing centralized printing style. The manufacturers have also added printing capabilities to these copiers to add more usable features and convenience without having to use many equipments and tools. With additional charge, of course. But compared to having to buy many printers to be used, the price is a small thing to consider. Centralizing printing has many advantages both for the company and employees.

Superior print quality. Being more sophisticated, not to mention more expensive, they produce more quality prints compared to other less expensive ones. If you think of the more beautiful prints that these copiers can make, then the expenses shed in buying them is fair enough.

Monitoring of supplies. A centralized printer allows the company to monitor the expenses and the use and overuse of toner, paper. Some of these printers have reports on the date and time of usage. This way the company can check if there are employees using them after office hours. These copiers are not meant for those who are taking advantage of company resources for personal purposes.

Specialized printing. Not all printers can print on both sides of the paper and make it not appear too obvious. Not all can format papers for stapling and folding requirements. These copiers are quite capable of these and other features depending on the program that that the operation requires. Lessens the task of the people and letting the printers do most of the work.

Easy maintenance and repair. Having only one system and repair is convenient for the IT department. Makes up for having to check all the printers and systems one by one. Some of the problems can even be repaired just from one main system.

For the employees having to do lots of printing and needed to go halfway down the entire length of the building to do so, using these copiers and printers would be one big relief for them. The expensive system also means that they would probably last a long time and quite some time too before repairs. It can also mean that the savings will have to wait after the initial purchase of these machines.

But if you think of the printing advantages like the ones mentioned, then why not?

For comments and inquiries about the article visit http://www.digitalprintingcompany.com

About The Author

Florie Lyn Masarate got the flair for reading and writing when she got her first subscription of the school newsletter in kindergarten.
A Computer And Internet Glossary

by: James Calvin

When you use computers and the Internet in your business, it's all too easy to start feeling like you're drowning in a sea of nonsense. Computer-related things tend to have a language all their own, and while you don't need to know all of it, there are many confusing words and phrases that you're going to come across sooner or later. Here's a quick primer.

Bandwidth. Bandwidth is the amount of data that your website can send each second, as well as the amount of data that the visitor to your website can receive. If either one doesn't have enough bandwidth, then the website will appear slowly. For this reason, you should choose a host with plenty of bandwidth, as well as testing that your site doesn't take too long to download on slow connections.

Browser. A browser is the software (see below) that visitors to your site use to view it. The most popular browser is Microsoft's Internet Explorer, which comes with Windows.

Cookie. Cookies are data files that your site can save on the computer of someone who visits that site, to allow it to remember who they are if they return. You will find that problems people have in ordering from you will almost inevitably be related to cookies -- they will need to have them turned on.

Download. Transferring data from a website to a computer.

Favourite. A favourite is a website that a user has stored to look at again, by choosing 'Add to Favourites' in their browser's menu.

FTP. File Transfer Protocol. This is a common method of uploading (see below) files to your website.

Javascript. A common language for writing 'scripts' on websites, which are small programs that make the site more interactive. Another common cause of problems for visitors.

JPEG. Joint Photographic Experts Group. This is the name of the most popular format for pictures on the web, named after the group that came up with it. If you want to put pictures on your website, you should save them as JPEGs.

Hardware. Hardware is computer equipment that physically exists. It is the opposite of software.

Hosting. If you've got a website out there on the Internet, then you'll be paying someone for hosting. It is the service of making your site available for people to see.

HTML. HyperText Markup Language. A kind of code used to indicate how web pages should be displayed, using a system of small 'tags'. The 'b' tag, for example, causes text to appear in bold, and the 'img' tag displays a picture.

Hyperlink. A hyperlink is when a piece of text on a website can be clicked to take you to another site, or another page on the same site. For example, if clicking your email address on your website allows someone to email you, then your email address is a hyperlink.

Programming. This is when the computer is given instructions to tell it what to do, using one of many 'programming languages'. Programming languages for the web include PHP and Perl.

Server. The server is where your website is stored, and it is the server that people are connecting to when they visit the site. If someone tells you, for example, that your server is 'down', it means that your website is inaccessible. Note that server refers both to the hardware and software of this system.

Software. Programs that run on the computer, or that make your website work. Microsoft Word is software, for example, as is Apache (the most popular web server software). Opposite of hardware.

Spider. Don't be scared if a spider visits your website! Spiders are simply programs used by search engines to scan your site and help them decide where it should appear when people search. It is good to be visited by spiders, as it means you should start appearing in search engines soon.

Upload. Uploading is when you transfer data from your own computer to your website. For example, you might upload your logo, or an article you've written. Opposite of download.

URL. Uniform Resource Locator. This is just a short way of saying 'web address', meaning what you have to type in to get to your website. Sometimes pronounced as 'Earl'.

About The Author

James Calvin will show you how to market your product to the World using the only REAL techniques that make the Internet pay off.
